about
This is one of the first songs I wrote when I began the Daughters of Cambodia project. It highlights the reality that many girls are either tricked or forced into situations that take away their freedom, especially in cases of human trafficking. And how this nearly never their own fault or choice.
lyrics
How Could You Know
How could you know what they told you wasn’t true
Why would you stay when, there was nothing left to do
How could it be that spirits could be locked down
How could you stand up with no one on your side
Believe me girl you tried
How could they not know this was never your fault
Where can you go when another language drowns you out
What are these lights for but bringing darkness in
Nothing of the earth should be for sale
How do we carry this weight?
Why does the whole world hesitate?
We are our own prayers now
Women in the world can no longer be held down
Give us the right to come alive in this life
Give us the freedom from violence and shame
We all have the love that when met with love makes more
Makes us more thoughtful than we were before
How do we carry this weight?
Why does the whole world hesitate?
We are our own prayers now
Women in the world can no longer be held down
When was it forgotten, women lead in peace
There is a wisdom that nations deeply need
We have to move forward, leaving the dark behind
Take care of each other nations side by side
How do we carry this weight?
Why does the whole world hesitate?
We are our own prayers now
Women in the world can no longer be held down
How could you know what…
How could it be that…
How could they not know…
